Définition : Commune d'Angleterre; comté de Cumberland, à l'embouchure de la rivière Ellen..

Histoire; Archéologie : 

Alauna fait partie du système de défense côtière de la rive sud de l'embouchure de la rivière Ituna / Eden, à l'ouest du Mur d'Hadrien, sur la Mer d'Irlande.

Elle a reçu en garnison pendant un temps la troisième cohorte Nervienne, sous les ordres d'un tribun.

  

Étymologie : 

- A) Pour ALAUNA : cf Rivet & Smith : 

* Ravenna 1074 : ALAUNA.

* Notitia Dignitatum, XL53 : Tribunus cohortis tertiae Nerviorum, ALIONE.

Derivation : See ALAUNA (1). The development of the vowel au > o, which mat be an exceptional indication of the British sound-change, and its implications, are discussed there and also on pp. 25-26. ND's form has what is probably locative -e, for classical -ae; its -i- is inexplicable except as the error of a scribe".

Identification. The Roman fort at Maryport, Cumberland (NY 0337), at the mouth of the river Ellen.

- B) Pour MARYPORT : cf. Eilert Ekwall, p 317 : 

"A late name. The port is old, but was called Ellnesfoote 1566 CWNS xxi and later. The old name means 'the mouth of R. Ellen'. The new harbour made here about 1750-60 was named, as pointed out in CWOS iii, p. 303, after the founder's wife Mary". "Un nom tardif. Le port est ancien, mais s'appelait Ellnesfoote 1566 CWNS xxi et suivants. L'ancien nom signifie 'l'embouchure de la rivière Ellen. The nouveau port créé ici vers 1750-60 a été nommé, comme il est indiqué dans CWOS iii, p. 303, d'après le nom de sa fondatrice Mary".

Observation JC Even : il y a probablement un rapport quasi direct entre le nom ALAUNA et le nom de la rivière Ellen.
