SOURCE.

- Ravenna, 10626 : CICUTIO

DERIVATION. Williams identifies a root cic-, citing Irish cich 'pap, breast' and Welsh cig ' meat, flesh ' ; Spanish chicha, a child's word for 'meat', might also be relevant. R&C add that 'The site of Brecon Gaer. . .is a rounded spur which is strikingly like a female breast in contour and outline.' This is not far-fetched; one may compare Mamucium and other parallels cited under that heading. The suffix in both names is a latinised version of Celtic *-uc-io-, present also in the personal name Vindomorucius and documented by Ekwall ERN Ixxviii, with adjectival force. Copyings of c for t and vice versa are common in our sources (and /kj/ /tj/ were sounded alike, a sibilant, in Vulgar Latin).

IDENTIFICATION. Probably the Roman fort of Brecon Gaer, Fenni Fach, Breconshire (SO 0029).
